AFTER MALLORY LEFT, Grey spent the better part of the rest of the morning preparing for a conversation with his father. He wanted to get it out of the way for his own peace of mind, but also, so he could move on with his mission with no other items to do still on his list. Settling issues with Mallory as well as his parents had been his two personal reasons for wanting to come back in human form. Although the situation with Mallory wasn’t exactly resolved—he yet had to determine how he could remove desire from the equation, at least from his side—each time he saw her, he came closer to believing that maybe they could reach a manageable understanding. This current outcome also gave him hope he could negotiate the same with his father.

As though for a business meeting, he sat down with a pen and paper and outlined the points he wanted to address. Having left from New Zealand, seemingly to everyone else but a couple of days ago, he decided to simplify his message over the phone. An hour later, finally, he was ready. Late in the evening in Queenstown was probably not a good time to be having this conversation, but if all went well, his father might get a restful, peaceful night’s sleep.

One-by-one, his finger ticked over the items in the notes as he listened to the phone ring, waiting for a voice to answer on the other end. His mother’s gentle sing-song tone greeted him and they spent a few minutes talking about Martine and her progress. There wasn’t much new news to exchange. Soon thereafter his mother tried to pass the phone to Mr. McKnight. Grey could hear the dismissal. “Obviously, he’s arrived safely. We don’t need to say, ’Hello’ to one another for me to know that. Thank him for waiting for a day to let us know, and remind him it’s practically bedtime here.”

“Mum, tell him I need to speak with him. This call is not about my safe arrival.”

There was only one topic that needed further explanation. “All right, hon.”

His father immediately came forward. “I’m here. What is it that couldn’t wait?” he questioned harshly, obviously still holding on to his anger from their last argument. Grey remembered calling him an arse.

“Grab a whiskey, and take it into your library,” Grey suggested bluntly. The explanation of his death, time in Heaven, and recent revival as a Watcher in the form of a man was too much to explain and so, instead, he relayed that he’d been visited by several spiritual beings, including God—thus, skipping his own current spiritual state. It was best not to complicate what he couldn’t demonstrate over the phone.

Mr. McKnight, upon hearing his son’s account of these visits, began his usual scoff of his son’s vivid imagination. However, this time Grey would brook no argument nor would he allow his father to worry him; either the current McKnight patriarch would accept what he was told or he would not.
