AFTER MALLORY LEFT, Grey spent the better part of the rest of the morning preparing for a conversation with his father. He wanted to get it out of the way for his own peace of mind, but also, so he could move on with his mission with no other items to do still on his list. Settling issues with Mallory as well as his parents had been his two personal reasons for wanting to come back in human form. Although the situation with Mallory wasnât exactly resolvedâhe yet had to determine how he could remove desire from the equation, at least from his sideâeach time he saw her, he came closer to believing that maybe they could reach a manageable understanding. This current outcome also gave him hope he could negotiate the same with his father.
As though for a business meeting, he sat down with a pen and paper and outlined the points he wanted to address. Having left from New Zealand, seemingly to everyone else but a couple of days ago, he decided to simplify his message over the phone. An hour later, finally, he was ready. Late in the evening in Queenstown was probably not a good time to be having this conversation, but if all went well, his father might get a restful, peaceful nightâs sleep.
One-by-one, his finger ticked over the items in the notes as he listened to the phone ring, waiting for a voice to answer on the other end. His motherâs gentle sing-song tone greeted him and they spent a few minutes talking about Martine and her progress. There wasnât much new news to exchange. Soon thereafter his mother tried to pass the phone to Mr. McKnight. Grey could hear the dismissal. âObviously, heâs arrived safely. We donât need to say, âHelloâ to one another for me to know that. Thank him for waiting for a day to let us know, and remind him itâs practically bedtime here.â
âMum, tell him I need to speak with him. This call is not about my safe arrival.â
There was only one topic that needed further explanation. âAll right, hon.â
His father immediately came forward. âIâm here. What is it that couldnât wait?â he questioned harshly, obviously still holding on to his anger from their last argument. Grey remembered calling him an arse.
âGrab a whiskey, and take it into your library,â Grey suggested bluntly. The explanation of his death, time in Heaven, and recent revival as a Watcher in the form of a man was too much to explain and so, instead, he relayed that heâd been visited by several spiritual beings, including Godâthus, skipping his own current spiritual state. It was best not to complicate what he couldnât demonstrate over the phone.
Mr. McKnight, upon hearing his sonâs account of these visits, began his usual scoff of his sonâs vivid imagination. However, this time Grey would brook no argument nor would he allow his father to worry him; either the current McKnight patriarch would accept what he was told or he would not.
